Wanda Jane Hicks

Wanda Jane Hicks, 65, passed away on July 13, 2026. Born on August 18, 1960, in Leesburg, Florida, Wanda was the youngest of seven children born to the late John Junior Hicks and Ruby Lee (Messer) Hicks. Wanda was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, Adolph Hicks of Slocomb, Alabama, and Dorothy (Hicks) Ryan, Johnny Hicks, and Kenneth Hicks, all of whom were lifelong Florida residents. She is survived by her sister, Flossie (Hicks) Stevens of Lady Lake, Florida, and her brother, Robert "Daryl" Hicks, of Oxford, Florida, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends who will forever cherish her memory. Wanda shared a deep and enduring bond with Tammy Cornell, whose love and friendship greatly influenced her life. After Tammy's passing in 1994, Wanda relocated to New York and devoted herself to helping raise Tammy's three children; Kimberly, Stephanie, and DJ, whom she cherished as her own. She remained a constant source of love, encouragement, guidance, and pride as they grew into successful adults. Once the children were grown, Wanda returned to Florida to care for her mother, whom she affectionately called "Lil Ruby." Caring for her mother was an act of love that reflected Wanda's selfless nature and deep devotion to family. Later in life, Wanda opened her heart and home to Lexi, Raquel, and Dominick, becoming a trusted mentor, steadfast supporter, and loving presence in their lives. She celebrated their accomplishments, guided them through challenges, and cheered them on every step of the way. Wanda loved all six of these children deeply and took immense pride in the adults they became. Those who knew Wanda would describe her as tough as nails, stubborn, loving, smart, helpful, giving, true, talented, artistic, loyal, genuine, authentic, handy, selfless, compassionate, strong, and funny. She was the person everyone called when something needed fixing, figuring out, building, or creating. Gifted with both her hands and her heart, Wanda could repair almost anything and never hesitated to help someone in need. Wanda's compassion extended far beyond family and friends. She had a special love for animals of all kinds, especially her beloved dogs, Roo and Foxy, who lived a life most dogs could only dream about. They had their own special beds, pajamas, toys, and every comfort imaginable, though they still insisted on sleeping next to Wanda every night. She also shared her home with her parrot, Monte, with whom she maintained a long-running love-hate relationship. Monte had a remarkable talent for testing Wanda's patience and giving her something to fuss about, but he was loved just the same. Her home was filled with the companionship, chaos, laughter, and unconditional love that only animals can bring. Wanda's sense of humor was as memorable as her generosity. She could make people laugh with a perfectly timed comment, a playful jab, or her wonderfully honest view of life. Even during difficult times, she found reasons to smile and helped others do the same. Whether she was spoiling Roo and Foxy far beyond reason, carrying on a daily argument with Monte, or sharing stories with family and friends, Wanda brought warmth and laughter wherever she went. Raised in church, Wanda knew the love of Jesus Christ from an early age. During the last years of her life, she devoted herself to studying the Holy Bible, seeking a deeper understanding of God's Word and strengthening her faith. That faith was reflected in the way she lived—through kindness, compassion, generosity, and service to others. She never turned away someone in need and remained giving and selfless right up to the very end. More than anything, Wanda will be remembered for her steadfast love, fierce loyalty, unwavering strength, and willingness to put others before herself. She built a life centered on caring for people, protecting those she loved, opening her home to those in need, and offering a helping hand whenever she could. Her life was a testament to faith, perseverance, sacrifice, and compassion. Though she will be deeply missed, the legacy of love she leaves behind will continue to live on in the hearts of her family, friends, children she helped raise, and all those whose lives were touched by her kindness.
