Nancy J. Abrams

Nancy J. Abrams, R.N. Nancy Joy Abrams entered this world on February 24, 1955 in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, the daughter of Don and Jacqueline (Fischer) Neuharth. Nancy grew up on the Family Farm in Western Nebraska, surrounded by her parents, sister, aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents. She graduated from Minatare (Neb.) High School, and received her Bachelor's Degree from Union College in Lincoln, Neb. After working for several years in Lincoln, she moved to Midland, TX where she first worked as a Legal Secretary, and then ran an Adult Day Care Program for Mental Health. In Midland she met and married Judge Michael Abrams in August 1983. Desiring to live closer to her family, she and Mike moved to Fort Collins, Colorado in January 1988. She returned to college and received a BSN with Honors from The University of Northern Colorado. As a Registered Nurse she worked at Poudre Valley Hospital for the next 27 years, 10 years in the Emergency Room, and 17 years in Post Anesthesia Care. She was a kind and compassionate Nurse, who always put the best interest of her patients first. She was also a founding member of the Larimer County Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Team, and performed a Forensic Exam that was instrumental in the conviction and incarceration of a murderer and serial sexual assault perpetrator. At age 39 Nancy joined the Wyoming Air National Guard, where she qualified as a Flight Nurse. She proudly served for five years as a member of the 187th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, where she made many good friends. She achieved the rank of Captain. In addition to her work, Nancy enjoyed snow skiing, reading, going to the movies, and taking care of dogs. Over the years she served on The Board of Directors of both The Flatlanders (Texas) ski club, and Crossroads Safe House. She retired in April 2017, and she and Mike had recently moved to The Villages, FL. After a 3 month battle with cancer, she passed away on August 24, 2018 in Leesburg, Florida. Her Survivors include her Husband of 35 years, Michael; her Sister, Donna Schneider (Everett) of Minatare, Neb.; her Niece, Natalie Birt (Jacob) of Knoxville, TN.; Five Rotary Exchange Students: Mikael, Brissia, Burak, Juan, and Dhwani; her Aunt and Uncle Jeri, and Marv Neuharth of Chadron, Neb.; and numerous cousins. A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, November 10, between 11 and 1, at the Timberline Church in Fort Collins. In Lieu of Flowers, please contribute to The Animal House Rescue of Fort Collins in her memory. We remember Nancy as a Loving Wife, and companion; and as a caring nurse. We miss her dearly and deeply.
