Mary Griffin

Obituary of Mary Griffin Mary Lew Griffin, known to her family and friends as Mary Lew, died on 07/23/2011; she was 90 years old. She follows her loving husband of 66 years, Albert (Jack) J. Griffin (1917-2009). She is survived by their two children; Stephen Griffin, Sr. and wife Carol, and Janice Zinn and her husband Mike. Their grandchildren: Anita Griffin Rushe and husband Denis, Stephen Griffin, Jr., Stacia Griffin Lyman and husband Patrick, Gina Linden, Brent Linden and Elizabeth Linden Martin and husband Rolando; their great-grandchildren: Denis, Aine, Shane and Ciara Rushe; Jackson, Tyler and Spencer Griffin and Cayla and Jude Lyman, and Sierra Martin. Mary Lew Garrett Holmes was born in 1921 in North Carolina but moved with her family to Miami in the mid twenties. Mary Lew is preceded by her loving mother Jane D. Holmes. Mary Lew's life work was that of being a wife, mother, homemaker and grandmother. She was a great southern cook and she was the world's best key lime pie maker and thankfully passed on those skills to her family. Although Mary Lew was living in Brooksville at the time of her passing, her life long home was Miami. From 1974 to 2009 she lived in Tavernier, FL where she so enjoyed the balmy ocean breezes. Mary Lew and Jack met in 1942, during World War II. Jack enlisted in the Army Air Corps. as a pilot. After a romantic courtship they were married and at War's end returned to Miami. Mary Lew was an active member of the Miami Yacht Club. She was part of a group of men and women who helped bring about the original clubhouse and dock facilities that still stand today. She served as "wife" of the commodore on three occasions. She attended Miami High Senior High School. Mary Lew was a dedicated Eastern Star. She enjoyed helping others and participating in its many activities. She always had a kind and complimentary word for family, friends, and strangers. Her kind words always seem to bring a smile to others. Although she is gone, her wonderful loving, humorous, sometimes just down right funny spirit will always be remembered.
