Frederick and Dorothy Weiss

Frederick A. Weiss, born in Providence, Rhode Island, passed away peacefully on September 24, 2025 in The Villages, Florida, at age 97, with Dorothy Rita Weiss, his wife of 70 years, by his side. Dorothy, age 94, passed away peacefully six days later, on September 30, 2025. They were inseparable in life and are now together in eternity. Fred served in the U.S. Army occupational forces in Japan following World War II, as an MP guarding the emperor. After the war, he started a TV repair shop in Warwick, before moving on to work for WRIB Radio as a broadcast engineer. He then worked in Providence for The Outlet Company’s WJAR-TV and Radio for 29 years, retiring as Chief Engineer. He was a member of the Rhode Island Order of Elks and the American Legion. Dorothy graduated from St. Mary Academy-Bayview High School in Riverside, Rhode Island, and obtained a business degree from Bryant College in Smithfield, Rhode Island. Dorothy taught typing and shorthand at St. Mary’s Parochial School in Stamford, Connecticut, and also worked at the Internal Revenue Service with her mother, Rita Plant. After obtaining a Master’s degree in Education from Bryant College, she became a Title I remedial reading teacher in the Warwick, Rhode Island School System. Fred and Dorothy were married for 70 years, and lived in Rhode Island for almost 80 years until retiring to The Villages in Florida in 2004. Together they raised two children and became loving grandparents and great-grandparents. They are survived by their daughter, Virginia Coulter; by their grandchildren, Samuel Coulter, Charles Coulter, and Elizabeth Coulter-Daniels; and their three great-grandchildren. They were preceded in death by their son, Frederick P. Weiss. Fred and Dorothy loved playing guitar, boating, fishing, swimming, clamming and quahogging on Narragansett Bay. Together Fred and Dorothy often made music and led sing-alongs with family and friends. Dorothy was an avid bird watcher and gardener, enjoyed quilting and sewing, and passed her love of reading onto her grandchildren. Together, Fred and Dorothy had a passion for living life with laughter, music and fun. Both will be dearly missed by their family and many friends. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
