Edward "Ed" Spann

With heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well lived, we remember Edward “Ed” Spann—a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, loyal friend, and dedicated public servant. Ed was a man defined by his compassion and unwavering commitment to others. For 23 years, he faithfully served his community as a firefighter, answering countless calls with courage, strength, and a steady heart. His dedication and leadership ultimately led him to the role of Fire Chief of the Mount Dora Fire Department, a position he held with honor until his retirement. His career was not simply a job—it was a calling rooted in his deep desire to protect and care for those around him. Beyond his service to the community, Ed’s greatest devotion was always to his family. After retiring, he lovingly dedicated himself to caring for his beloved wife, Catherine, whose happiness and well-being were always his top priority. Their bond was one of deep affection and steadfast partnership—a true testament to enduring love. Ed was a proud and devoted father to Lamar (Teresa), Jason (Becky), Hayley (John), Belinda and her husband, and to Kelley Davis. He cherished each of his children and took great pride in the lives they built and the families they nurtured. His love only grew as his family expanded, and he found immeasurable joy in being “Grandpa” to Christopher, Tyler, Tyson, Cody, Kiera, Trenton, Ashden, Zayne, Evinlee, Cheylyn, Joshua, Preston, and two great grandchildren; Jesse, and Brynnleigh Mae. Each grandchild held a special place in his heart, and he shared a unique and treasured bond with every one of them. Aside from his beloved Cathy, one of Ed’s greatest joys was fishing. Whether casting a line at sunrise or spending quiet hours by the water, fishing was more than a pastime—it was a reflection of his patient, peaceful spirit. Those moments brought him contentment and often became cherished memories shared with family and friends. Ed was predeceased by his father, Harvey; his mother, Hattiemae; his brother, James; his sister, Sara; and his beloved grandson, Caleb. Ed will be remembered for his gentle strength, his caring nature, his steady presence, and the way he made those around him feel safe and loved. His legacy lives on not only in his years of service but in the countless lives he touched with kindness, wisdom, and quiet devotion. He will be deeply missed and forever loved. Services will be held Friday, April 10, 2026 with a viewing/visitation taking place at Beyers Funeral Home Chapel Umatilla between 12pm-1pm and the funeral starting at 1pm. A graveside service with honors from The City of Mount Dora Fire Department will take place immediately following at Sorrento Cemetery.
