Steven Couch

Steven Michael Couch was born February 5, 1955, to Alvin Couch and Imogene “Gene” Hill in St. Louis, Missouri. He passed away peacefully in his home in Astor Florida on January 24th, 2024. Steve would tell about traveling to Florida as a teenager with his step father John to go fishing on the St. Johns river in Astor. Aside from being with his wife, children and grandchildren, being on or near the water with a fishing pole is where Steve was most content. Steve met his wife Sharon over a CB radio in the St. Louis area. He was known as “River King” and she was “Sweet Pea”. They became a couple and officially tied the knot on July 9th, 1977. Together they would move to Birch Tree and begin a life there on a small farm. He and his wife had three children; Corey, Kim & Kelly and raised them all in the same house on 40 acres. After graduating high school Steve began his successful career on the river boats. Starting out as a deckhand, he worked his way up and quickly became Captain, going up and down the Mississippi river. He worked for several companies over the years before coming off the river to spend more time at home with his family. In 2007, they would sell the family farm and move closer to the water. They found their new home in Elizabeth Arkansas with the lake just a short drive away. Many fish were caught, with many more memories being made there. Another move happened in 2021 back to his original fishing grounds of Astor Florida. While there, Steve spent many days on the water, even venturing out into the ocean for some deep sea fishing. Steve was a collector. He was always on the hunt for old money, guns and ammunition and anything fishing, specifically old fishing lures. He loved to eat seafood, and enjoyed the thrill of turning his granddaughters onto crab legs and lobster tail. To know Steve was to love him. You never had to wonder what he was thinking, and you might have to endure 20 minutes of him telling you just that, even if it could have been said in 5! He loved his wife, Sharon. His three children he loved more, but his grandkids and his mini dachshunds, were where his heart truly was. He is preceded in death by his parents, Alvin & Imogene; a brother Kerry Marion, a sister Carla Cline, and his best friend, Nelson (a mini dachshund), who was by his side nearly every day for 17 years. He leaves only for a while, his loving wife, Sharon, of the home. His sisters; Joan, Chris, Sandy & Barb. His children; Corey Couch and wife Cassie of Birch Tree, MO, Kim Sickmeier and husband Jason of Columbia, MO, Kelly Younger and husband Cole of Eminence, MO. His grandchildren; Gavin, Mylo, Hadley, Weston, Conner, Avery & Chloe. His dogs, who were like his children; Maya and Molly. He also leaves a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Steve will be missed by many, but his life and legacy will live on through those of us he leaves behind. We’ll see you soon, River King. Enjoy your time fishing on the lakes of Heaven.
