Robert Mark Tonnesen

Robert M. Tonnesen, 89, of The Villages, Florida, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones. He was born in Shamokin, Pennsylvania, to the late Marcus and Sophie Tonnesen. Robert proudly served in the United States Navy as an aviation electronics technician during the Korean War. Following his military service, he continued to contribute to the Navy reserves while building a successful career at General Electric. Over the course of 37 years at GE, Robert excelled in various roles, including electronics technician, manufacturing engineer, system test engineer, and sonar program manager, including working as a subcontractor for NASA, before his well-deserved retirement. Growing up in Staten Island, New York, Robert eventually settled in Camillus, New York, where he resided for four decades. In 2005, he embarked on a new chapter of life in The Villages alongside his beloved wife, Pauline (Booth) Tonnesen. Their loving partnership of 63 years was a testament to their commitment and devotion. He was an avid golfer, and genealogy hobbyist. Robert was a cherished father to his two sons, R. Mark Tonnesen II (Diana) and Paul W. Tonnesen (Patti), and a proud grandfather to his three granddaughters, Calista, Amanda, and Brittany. He is also survived by his sister, Joyce Hardy (Bruce), of Wakefield, Massachusetts. Faith played a central role in Robert's life, and he was an active member of St. Mark's Church in Summerfield, Florida. He embodied a life of service, dedicating his time to his community and The Knights of Columbus. Robert's genuine care for others will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His legacy of love, dedication, and service will forever be cherished in the hearts of those he touched. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, September 12, 2023 at 10 AM at St Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church, 7081 SE Hwy 42 in Summerfield, Florida. Burial will follow at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida with full Military Honors.
