Obituary of Joyce Sulfaro Joyce A. Sulfaro, 68, of Leesburg Florida, died peacefully on Sunday night, October 30th, 2016. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Guy Sulfaro, her two daughters, Jackie Thompson, Clermont, Florida, and Kristie Terrell, Lynchburg, Virginia, and her five grandchildren, Kyle, 15, Caroline, 15, Cooper, 12, Ethan, 11, and Addison, 10. Joyce was born on October 23rd, 1948 to Mildred and John Carvelli in Brooklyn, New York. She attended St. Simon and Jude Catholic Elementary School and then St. Edmonds High School where she graduated in 1966. After high school she was accepted to Molloy Catholic College in Rockville Center, New York, where, in 1970, she earned her Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. Later, she attended Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. She earned her Master's Degree in Educational Leadership, Curriculum, and Instruction. Joyce had a distinguished career in education. She began teaching in 1970 in Brooklyn, New York. In 1971 she married the love of her life, Guy Sulfaro. In 1972 they moved to the Miami, Florida area where she continued teaching 7th grade at Annunciation Catholic Elementary School; in 1980 she became the principal. In 1984 Joyce and Guy were relocated to Durham, North Carolina. Joyce taught at St. Tomas Moore in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. In 1988 they moved to Rocky Mount, North Carolina where she served as an Assistant Principal of Nash Central Junior High school in Nashville, North Carolina. Later she became the Director of Safe Schools for Nash-Rocky Mount Schools and rounded out her tenure as the Principal of Tar River Learning Center, an alternative high school in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. After thirty years of dedicated service to education, Joyce was no longer able to work and was placed on disability in 2002. In 2003, Joyce and Guy moved to The Plantation in Leesburg, Florida. Over the next 12 years, Joyce and Guy, cruise enthusiasts, continued their passion for cruising and eventually went on over 60 cruises together. While at home, she loved playing various card games with friends and attending socials and concerts organized by her community. Her greatest enjoyment and happiness was when she got to spend time with her grandchildren. Joyce was a devoted wife, loving mother, proud grandmother, loyal friend, and distinguished educator. She was dearly loved and respected by her family, friends, and colleagues. A celebration of her life will be held at Beyer's Funeral Home in Leesburg, Florida on Thursday November 10th, 2016. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. with the funeral service beginning at 11 a.m. followed by procession to her final resting place at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell.
