James Edward Shaddix

James Edward Shaddix, Sr. reached for his bride's hand, took a soft breath, and peacefully left this earth to celebrate eternal life with his Lord on Tuesday, April 24, 2018. Please join us as we celebrate his accomplishments on Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at 3:00 followed by a fish fry at the Astor Baptist Church located at 24731 Ann Street Astor, FL 32102. His favorite music will play beginning at 2:30. We ask that you honor him by wearing blue jeans and a red shirt (their favorite matching outfit)! James was born January 2, 1935 to William Orville Shaddix and Rosalie Walker Shaddix in Miami, Florida. In 1948, he met Carolyn Virginia Galbreath (Ginger) and became "Sweethearts" with her at the age of 13. After graduation from Mainland High School in 1953, he married Ginger and became her "Forever Love" on December 28, 1953 at the First Baptist Church of Daytona Beach. He was the proud father to five children, James (Lucy) Shaddix, Carolyn (Jim) Gardinier, Sandy (Sam) Talluto, Sunny (Lindsey) Brutus, and Bill (Ginny) Shaddix. He was "Pa James" to 30 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren, "Mr. James" to countless children of the Daytona Beach and Astor areas, and "Friend" to all who knew him. James was a strong man of faith and believed in the celebration of life through service, so early on he dedicated himself to making this world a better place. He proudly served in the United States Navy and modeled for his children "American Pride!" He was actively involved in extra-curricular activities at the local schools both through his children and his work and never missed an event if his children were participating. He was active in the Mainland High School Class of '53 Alumni Group where he loved to share stories with his friends. He served the community through his work at the Pure Ice Company, insisting that any athlete needing to cool off was given a chunk of ice as they walked from Mainland High School on Bay Street to practice near the current Bethune Cookman University and back again! Even suggesting that any employee who did not, would be fired! He supported his "Pretty Lady" for 26 years with the City of Daytona Beach Parks and Recreation Department. He never blinked an eye when she had an idea which would provide enriching experiences to children, including taking a busload of kids to Miami to see the Jets play professional football. James left the ice business and moved to management at Colonial Colony North where he continued to serve. He organized trips for his resident families which took them on adventures they never thought possible! After retirement, James continued to serve in his new community through the Youth Ministry at the Astor Baptist Church with an extra special focus on Vacation Bible School. He was an active member of the Kiwanis International of Astor, and the Astor Community Association. He and his bride, Ginger, were honored to receive the Community Spirit Award in 2010 for their contribution and commitment to the betterment of the Astor Community. James is pre-deceased by his bride, Ginger Shaddix (aka Ma Ginger and Pretty Lady), his loving parents Orville and Rosalie Shaddix, mother and father in law Marko and Ann Galbreath, brother in law Dr. Mark Galbreath, and his sister in law and brother in law Barbara and Truman Kennedy. James is survived by his five children and their families, brother Bill (Nancy) Shaddix, brother in law, Jim (Sarah) Galbreath, sister in law, Emily Galbreath, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. In lieu of flowers and as a legacy to James' continuous service, please honor his wishes by directing donations in James' name to, the First Baptist Church of Astor Vacation Bible School (24731 Ann Street Astor, Fl 32102).
