Grace Norman Carlson

Our mother, Mahala Grace (Norman) Carlson, 91, of Tavares, Florida passed away peacefully, surrounded by her children, on September 29th at Advent Health Care Center in Tavares, Florida. Mom was born at home on March 27th, 1930, in DeLand to Gertrude and Linton Norman. She was the youngest of 9 children and lived in DeLand most of her life. Mom and the love of her life, Raymond E. Carlson, raised three children: Sharon (Donald) Noel of Fostoria, Ohio, Glen Carlson of Deland, and Marie (Douglas) Kroulik of Tavares, Florida. Dad's line of work provided adventure, allowing them to reside in Georgia, Mississippi, Missouri, Panama, Singapore, Libya, Dubai, and Spain. They enjoyed numerous excursions, including tours of Hawaii, France, England, Malta, and Sweden. While Dad was busy at work, Mom kept busy making quilts. She made over 100 of them. It was a labor of love as she hand-quilted tiny, perfect stitches onto each quilt. Mom gifted them to her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and friends. These treasures are sprinkled all over the United States. Mom loved to entertain and hosted numerous gatherings in her home. Her large, musically talented family enjoyed impromptu concerts of violins, guitars, pianos, and vocals there. Her beautiful quilts, lovely home, immaculate yard, being a sharp dresser, and great cooking will be fondly remembered by all who knew her. Receiving her chocolate fudge and/or fruitcakes at Christmas was always a treat! She touched many lives with her generosity, love, and strong faith. Mom is survived by three children, seven grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, ten great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond E. Carlson, her parents, and eight siblings. A memorial service will be held at Beyers Funeral Home in Umatilla on Saturday, October 9th at 4pm. The family of Grace Carlson would like to thank the staff at Advent Health Care Center and Vitas Hospice Care for all the love and attention they bestowed on our mom. Such exceptional and tender care was provided by Jennifer and Samantha of Vitas. Mom appreciated and loved them both dearly, as do we.
