Obituary of George Wilkes George Robert "Bob" Wilkes of Leesburg, Florida passed away Thursday April 5, 2012. Born in Jefferson, Georgia he spent most of his life in Gainesville, Georgia before moving to Leesburg in 1972 to manage Leesburg Cablevision. A member of First Baptist Church in Leesburg, he served in many capacities, most notably as a Saturday Sunday School Teacher. As President of the Wilkes Foundation, he traveled extensively doing mission work in the US as well as Africa, Brazil, Romania, and Haiti. Bob was a veteran serving in the Navy and Army Air Corp as a Radio Technician. He worked as a Transmission engineer for many radio and television stations until he entered the cable television industry in 1966. Offshore fishing, flying and letting his grandchildren drive before obtaining a license were some of his favorite hobbies. Survivors include sons: Robin (Lynn) and Brian (Robin) Wilkes of Leesburg; grandsons: William Chavis of Lady Lake; Jay, Cameron, and Scott Wilkes of Leesburg; sisters: Ernestine Daniel of Portland, Oregon, Mabeth "Betty" Yarbrough of Athens, Georgia, Joan Allen of Sunny Side, Georgia, Mary Jane Campbell of Kansas City, Missouri and brother Jack Wilkes of Pelham, Georgia; several nieces, nephews,and extended family Colleen and Scott Norris of Leesburg and Elaine Pickett of Moss Bluff. Bob was preceded in death by his wife Maureen (2009) and son Gary Lynn Wilkes (1996). A visitation will be held at Beyers Funeral Home in Leesburg, FL on Friday April 13, 2012 from 5-7 pm and Funeral Services on Saturday April 14, 2012 at First Baptist Church of Leesburg at 11 am. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Leesburg. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations to Cornerstone Hospice or the Alzheimer's Association.
