Obituary of Donald Vargo Donald Joseph Vargo, 84 of The Villages, Florida, passed away on August 5, 2014. Beloved husband for 57 years to Loretta (nee Smith). Cherished father of Terrence (Charlene McDonald), Jacqueline, Michelle (Tom Gregory), Timothy (Rebecca), Daniel (Pamela), and Carolyn (John Majowka). Son of the late Joseph and Josephine. Brother to Jack, Lenny, Jim, Evelyn, Rita and Marie. Loving grandfather of Caitlin, Rachel, Sarah, Nicholas, Josie, Simon, and Alexandra. Don earned a Masters degree in physics from John Carroll University, and was a physicist at NASA Lewis Research Center in Cleveland, NASA Headquarters in Washington D.C., and NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. The majority of his career was devoted to transferring NASA technology to industry for the advancement of scientific and medical products and services. He played a key role in the development of the maceration probe at NASA Lewis Research Center, which contributed to the eventual design of laser surgical instruments used in cataract surgery. An active member of the Catholic church, Don participated in the choir, served as a Eucharistic minister, headed the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, and led several bible study groups. He enjoyed golf and provided free tax preparation services while living in The Villages. Don donated his body to medical research. A visitation will be held Thursday, August 7th from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Beyers Funeral Home in Lady Lake, FL. A funeral mass will be held on Friday August 8, 2014 at 8:00 AM at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.
