Obituary of Courtney Torian Courtney M. Torian, Jr. of The Villages, FL passed away after a lengthy illness on Monday, November 16, 2009. He was born on June 18, 1930 in South Boston, Virginia. His family moved to Hampton, VA in 1948. He attended public schools in Hampton and graduated from Newport News Business College with a degree in Accounting. He attended advertising courses at Princeton University and the American Press Institute at Columbia University in 1964. He won state, national and international awards for Excellence in Advertising Design and Content. He and his wife, Betty moved to The Villages from Newport News in November 2003. Courtney began employment with The Daily Press, Inc. newspaper on November 1, 1950 in the Classified Advertising Department and transferred to the Retail Department in 1951. He worked as a Retail Advertising Sales Representative until January of 1968, at which time he was promoted to the position of Assistant Retail Advertising Manager. Courtney served in this position until being promoted to Retail Advertising Manager in August of 1969. He was promoted to the position of Assistant Advertising Director in January of 1986 and retired from The Daily Press on January 1, 1988. His past memberships in business organizations and civic clubs include: Member, Junior Chamber of Commerce Member, Virginia Press Association Member, Hampton Roads, Advertising Federation Member, Mid-Atlantic Newspaper Advertising and Marketing Executives Member, International Newspapers Advertising and Marketing Executives Member, Newport News Rotary Club Member, Warwick Yacht and Country Club Member, Ducks Unlimited President, Peninsula Newspapers Credit Union President, Stanton Foundation President, Peninsula Sales and Marketing Executives Board of Directors Member, Southeastern Virginia Better Business Bureau Board of Directors Member, Peninsula Family Services Board of Directors Member, Hampton Roads Eye Center Advisory Board Member, St. Stephens Episcopal Church Member, St. Stephens Episcopal Church Vestry (two terms) Layreader and Usher, St. Stephens Episcopal Church Member, St. Stephens Episcopal Church Perpetual Fund Board Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, November 21, 2009 at 3:00 PM at Beyers Funeral Home Chapel, Lady Lake, FL with Deacon Janet Galbreath of St George Episcopal Church, The Villages officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Marion County Hospice, PO Box 4860, Ocala, FL 34478-4860. Services Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, November 21, 2009 at 3:00 PM at Beyers Funeral Home Chapel, Lady Lake, FL with Deacon Janet Galbreath of St George Episcopal Church, The Villages officiating. Interment A private graveside service and inurnment will be held at the family plot in the Peninsula Memorial Park in Newport News, VA in December 2009.
