Obituary of Dorothy Smith Dorothy Estele Bushnell Smith, 91, of Leesburg passed away Friday, March 14, 2014 at the Cornerstone Hospice. Born July 24, 1922 in Chicago, IL the daughter of Patrick and Rose (Schmidt) Bushnell. Dorothy was educated in Chicago and became a nun in the Sisters of Saint Francis in Joliet, Illinois. She eventually became the head of all of the sisters in the Nunnery. She served the Sisters of St. Francis for a period of twenty years. She moved to Miami and became a teacher for the Archdiocese of the Catholic Church and ended her career in education as an Elementary Principal. She and her late husband, Major Kenneth E. Smith, US Army (Ret.) moved from Summerfield to Lake Port Square in 2002. Dorothy was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Leesburg, where she was one of the members to assist in organizing the group of Daughters of the King. She was past member of Delta Kappa Gama, a life member of the American Legion Post 347 Auxiliary and a member of VFW Post 8083 Auxiliary Bellview, Florida. Survivors include many loving nieces and nephews including, Priscilla S. (the late Dr. Harold) Bowman, Leesburg and Dr. Laurie (Marty) Hopman, Hilo, Hawaii, and a beloved friend and relative Virginia Schmidt, of Boynton Beach, Florida. Her contagious smile, warm heart and kindness will be missed by all. She was the kind of friend you remember, and the kind of friend you never replace. She was a source of strength and much loved by her many friends at Lake Port Square. Her friends were caring, loved, and supportive of Dorothy. Memorial Services will be held Thursday, April 3, at 1:30 pm in St. James Episcopal Church in Leesburg with Father Thomas Trees officiating. Dorothy will be laid to rest with her husband at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. James Episcopal Church, 204 Lee Street, Leesburg, FL 34748. Services Memorial Serviceswill be held Thursday, April 3, at 1:30 pm in St. James Episcopal Church in Leesburg with Father Thomas Trees officiating.
