Obituary for Richard G "Dick" Olson

On Wednesday April 1st 2021 Richard “Dick” Gay Olson, at the age of 90, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends.

Dick was born November 8th 1930 in Bad Axe, Michigan to Waldemer Olson and Annabelle (Olson) Kerr. In his younger years Dick’s favorite memories were working the farm in Central Missouri with his Unc and Annie learning the value of hard work. He attended Vandalia High School as well as Moberly High School and Junior College later in life.

Dick married Ruby Gladys Richardson in Moberly, Missouri on November 14th 1950. He and Gladys went on to have six children; Richard Dayle Olson, David Gay Olson, Melvin Lee Olson, Mark Allen Olson, Bridgette Ann (Olson) Watters, and Charles Derrick Olson throughout the 70 years of marriage as well as 12 Grandchildren and 15 Great Grand Children. Dick was very active with his children’s life and he enjoyed coaching his children’s sports leagues. He stayed active in his grandchildren and even his great grand children’s lives throughout the years. His career in the Navy allowed him to travel the country and show his children the United States and he loved helping them experience the outdoors.

The Navy was a large part of Dick’s life. A career military man serving 23 years, he enlisted in February 13th 1948. Dick served through the Korean War and as a Nuclear trained Technician he was at the forefront of the transition to the modern Nuclear Submarine Force in the 1950’s. His career took him aboard the USS Queenfish (1948-1952), USS Bergall (1957-1958), USS Patrick Henry (1959-1962), USS Nathan Hale (1965-1971), and USS Henry L. Stimson (Mar 1975- Sept 1975) as well as recruiting duty. Dick retired at the rank of Master Chief on September 17th 1975.

Dick was active in the community after retiring and moving to Florida. Dick was member of many community organizations such as the Loyal Order of Moose, Fleet Reserve, American Legion, and AMVETS. Dick attended Horticulture school after leaving the Navy and he loved being out in the yard and gardening. He enjoyed bowling, traveling with his wife, working on his home, participating in community activities, and spending time with his family. Dick was known and respected for his hard work ethic and his willingness to help people. He will be greatly missed by all who have had the pleasure to know and love him.

Funeral services will be held on April 12th at First Baptist Church of Umatilla, 550 Hatfield Dr, Umatilla, Florida. Viewing will begin 10:30 AM and Funeral Service will start at 11:00 AM.
