Obituary for Mary Mahoney

Mary Louise “Mickey” Mahoney, 92, of Umatilla, Florida left this world having lived a wonderful life on February 18, 2021 to be in the arms of her Savior and reunite with family and loved ones that have gone before her.

She was born February 6, 1929 in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Albert H. Mahoney and Mary Rice. Much of her childhood was spent in Miami, Florida and it was there that she completed a registered nursing program at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Lovingly, she practiced nursing for over forty years, moving and helping throughout the country. Her experience even included a three year stay as lead nurse for The Grand Canyon Park Service.

Her caring heart prompted her to move and spend four years in San Francisco, California during the early and trying years of the AIDS epidemic. It was this experience that prompted her to move back to Miami, Florida to try and help patients there and then later in Orlando, Florida.

Her passion for the outdoors saw her traveling frequently in her travel trailer throughout much of the Southeast and she even successfully rode a motorcycle on a cross-country excursion. In the 1980’s she was introduced to the services offered by Habitat for Humanity and she spent many summers helping in Georgia to construct homes for those in need. She worked with former president Jimmy Carter on multiple occasions at work sites and attended his Sunday school class at his church in Plains whenever she was in the area.

Mickey was a member of the First Baptist Church of Umatilla and was still active, as a life member, of the Mt. Dora Lawn Bowling club and was a member of the Women of the Moose in Lake County.

No public service is scheduled, but interment is being handled by Beyers Funeral Home of Umatilla, Florida. In lieu of cards or flowers, please consider making a donation in her name to the charity of your choice.
