Obituary

Sylvia (Carlisle) Goodson Bryan, 80, went home to her Lord on Wednesday, January 22, 2020. Born to Robert Arlie and Bonnie Faye Rogers Carlisle in Linden Florida, in 1939, Sylvia was the second of four children, Bill (Mary, deceased) Carlisle (deceased), Tommy (Carrol) Carlisle and Sharon (Dennis) Langford. She is a fifth generation Sumter County native. She graduated from Webster High School in 1957 as the class Salutatorian. Sylvia married James “Jimmy” Goodson Sr. (deceased) and had two children, James Jr. “Rocky” (Eileen) and Sandra Goodson McClanahan (Dale, deceased). She later married Carl Norris Bryan (deceased). She has four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Sylvia had a career in banking for 32 years, all in Sumter County, with her final position as branch manager in Webster. She was very active in her community as a Girl Scout leader, Women’s Club and Webster Civic Club member. She was a band mom and band booster member for the South Sumter School bands. She loved attending the Linden Cemetery yearly picnic and helped organize the annual Webster High alumni gatherings held during the annual Webster Cemetery picnic. She was also instrumental in establishing the history for the Legacy Hall of past Webster High graduates, which is housed at Webster Elementary School.

Sylvia loved to travel. She visited all 50 states as well as traveling to Europe, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. She was on a trip when the 9/11 tragedy occurred. She and her travelling companions were stranded in the state of Washington and because of flight cancellations and other considerations wound up buying a vehicle just to get home.

A time of visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday, January 25th from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. at Purcell Chapel. Sylvia’s funeral will be held at the Linden Church of God on Sunday, January 26, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. and be conducted by her brother-in-law, the Reverend Dennis Langford. Sylvia will be interred at her beloved Linden Cemetery, surrounded by many of her late friends and family.

Purcell Funeral Home will handle the arrangements.

I always loved talking to this sweet lady and family member about her trips. It was a joy and pleasure listening to all of the wonderful memories that Sylvia created, and could cherish for a life time. I thank Sylvia for teaching me that it is okay to create memories with loved ones, and things that you love to do. My deepest love and sympathy goes to the family, and I wish I could be there to celebrate her life. - Cody Langford
