It is with great sadness that the family of Carolyn Stafford Evans announces her passing on July 6, 2018 in Ocala, FL. She was 78 years old.
Carolyn was born on May 27, 1940 in Sophia, West Virginia. She spent her early childhood in Rural Retreat, Virginia before moving to Sumter County, Florida in 1954. She graduated from Wildwood High School in 1959.
In 1960, Carolyn married Sumter County native and future mayor of the City of Coleman, Lonnie Gene Evans Sr. The couple built a home in Coleman, where they raised their son, Gene, and their grandchildren, Katie and Lon.
Carolyn and Lonnie ran a thriving home building business from the 1970s through 2010, as well as a hardware store in downtown Coleman in the 1970s and 80s. Carolyn was an active member and president of the local Azalea Garden Club throughout the 1980s and 90s, and maintained her own subtropical garden. She was an animal lover and advocate, and at various points during her life, she opened her home to cats, dogs, horses, rabbits, chickens, and even peacocks.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, Julius and Ethel Stafford; her sister Pamie Stafford; and her husband, Lonnie Evans. She is survived by her brothers, Jack and Worley Stafford of Ocala, FL; her sister, Zenda Stafford Martin of Oxford, FL; her son and his wife, Gene and Dawn Evans of Coleman, FL; her grandchildren, Katie and Lon Evans of Coleman, FL; and her great-granddaughters, Elle and Lyla.
Graveside memorial services will take place on Wednesday, July 11th at 10 AM at the Adamsville Cemetery. Beyers Funeral Home in Leesburg, FL is accepting floral arrangements.
