George Hemingway Jr.
George B. Hemingway Jr., 79, passed away on Saturday, December 9, 2017. Born in Panama City, Florida, November 28, 1938, he moved to Umatilla, Florida, in 1973 as District Ranger of the Ocala National Forest. In 1986 he moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where he retired in 2004 as Regional Special Use Coordinator, U.S. Forest Service. In 2009, George returned to Lake County. He was a 1961 graduate of the University of Florida, School of Forestry. George was an active member and former president of the Umatilla Kiwanis Club, an avid supporter of the Florida Gators, and could be frequently found on the tennis courts.
He is survived by his wife: Judith “Judy” L. Hemingway, daughters: Jennifer A. Hemingway, (Col. Anthony G. Hoffman), Arlington, Virginia; Ashley G. Hildebrand (Chris), St. Augustine, Florida; and three grandchildren: Christopher Hildebrand, Allison Hildebrand, and Anthony “AJ” G. Hoffman Jr.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 16, 2017, First Baptist Church of Umatilla, Pastor Brooks Braswell officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. on Friday, December 15, 2017, Beyers Funeral Home in Umatilla. Interment will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 18, 2017, in Bronson, Florida.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers, gifts be made to the George B. Hemingway Jr. Memorial Fund at the University of Florida IFAS School of Forest Resources and Conservation.
