James William Veal, Sr.
James (Jim) Veal was born in Cedartown, Georgia on June 24, 1929 to John and Elizabeth Veal. James passed away peacefully on November 13 at 88 years of age, surrounded by his family at the Lane Purcell Hospice House.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Eloise McLaney Veal, his son Jim Veal Jr., daughter Beth Irving (Scott), and daughter Kathy Dixon (Wiley). James is survived by six grandchildren, Michele Hunnewell (George), Josh Dixon (Stephanie), Katie Davis (Justin), Kelli Veal, Sarah Dixon, and Aaron Irving (Danny). In addition, there are 10 great grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandson. James has one surviving sister, Ann Veal Kuhn (Bill), and one brother, Bobby Veal (Carol), along with many nieces and nephews.
James moved to Lake Panasoffkee in 1954 and owned and managed Pana Vista Lodge for 63 years. He was a member of Lake Panasoffkee United Methodist Church, the Lake Panasoffkee Restoration Council, the Sumter County Water Board for many years, and was active with the Scenic Sumter Heritage Byway. An active environmentalist, James Veal worked hard to preserve the beautiful waterways of the Withlacoochee River and Lake Panasoffkee. He was the recipient of many civic and community awards.
James W. Veal, Sr. was loved by many and will be missed by all.
Visitation will be at Purcell Chapel on Friday, November 17th from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.
Memorial service will be held at Lake Panasoffkee United Methodist Church on Saturday, November 18th at 11:00 a.m., with Reverend Marguerite Matthews officiating.
