Obituary for Bernice "Bea" Jass

Bernice Irene Jass (Dunson) passed away at the age of 92 on August 3rd, 2017 at her home in the Plantation at Leesburg, FL due to Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. She was the beloved wife of Donald Jass for 65 years, loving mother of David (Susan) of Mount Dora, FL and Carl (Kathy) Jass of Greenboro, NC,/Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA) treasured grandmother of Jeremy, Nathan (Ashley) and Stephen, Adam and Matthew (Nina) Jass and great grandmother of Ian, River, Gabriel and Cedar Jass. She was predeceased by her brother Tom and sister Idella.
Bea was born on May 20th, 1925 in her home near Mt. Victory, Ohio to Lewis and Florence Dunson. She grew up near the small farming town of LeRue, Ohio. During WWII, her father moved his family to Tampa, FL where he fabricated wooden parts for army aircraft. She graduated from Plant High School in Tampa in 1942. When her family returned to Ohio, she moved to Chicago for training as a Laboratory Technician while working for Western Union as a telegraph operator. After she completed her training she moved to Dayton, Ohio to work as a Lab Tech at St. Cecilia Hospital and later at the Arctic Aeromedical Laboratory at Ladd AFB near Fairbanks, Alaska. Years later, when her sons were in high school, she worked as a receptionist in a pediatrician’s office to help pay for their college education.
She met Donald Jass at Ladd AFB and they were married in April of 1952. As an Army wife, she travelled from coast to coast in the USA and spent 3 years in Europe, enjoying road trips and family camping. She volunteered her time, first as a Cub Scout Den Mother, and later worked at her church thrift store in Leesburg. Family was Bea’s priority in life and her greatest joy was in being a wife, mother and grandmother.
A memorial service will be held at Calvary Chapel of the Lakes, 250 Guerrant Street, Umatilla, FL on Saturday, August 12th at 10 am. Inurnment will be in Sylvan Abby Memorial Park in Clearwater, FL.
